Same Sex Weddings in Italy
LGBT couples choosing to get married in Italy will find a warm and open-minded environment, as well as one of the most beautiful settings for their dream wedding. Most same-sex couples choose to have a Symbolic Ceremony in Italy, which allows complete personalization and can fully represent their unique union. A symbolic ceremony can be officiated by a professional celebrant or by one of the couple’s best friends, for example, someone who knows their past, their special bond, and whose words will likely move the audience to tears.
Since February 2016, same-sex couples can enter a legally binding Civil Union in Italy. The procedure is divided into two steps: before the date of the civil union ceremony is set, it is necessary to request an appointment to the Vital Record’s Office of the town hall where you intend to get married in Italy. Both spouses must be present at the appointment. Between the first appointment and the civil union ceremony, there will be a gap of 30 days minimum to allow the Vital Record’s Office to gather additional documentation if needed. For this reason, a symbolic ceremony or blessing is the preferred option for most gay couples planning a destination wedding in Italy.
